Buccal fat removal

Buccal fat or buccal fat pad is the naturally-occurring pad of fat deposited in the hollow area beneath each cheekbone. Everyone has buccal fat pads, just the size of the fat pad varies with each individual. One buccal fat pad can be larger than the other fat pad and although it is completely natural many people are still conscious of their appearance of face shape and size which hampers their confidence.

Buccal fat pad removal is a plastic surgery done to remove the buccal fat pad to get a thinner or slimmer face surgically. There are different names for this surgery and it is also known as cheek reduction surgery, cheek contouring, and buccal lipectomy. This type of plastic surgery thins the cheeks and is used for the facial definition to define facial angles.

Before the buccal fat removal surgery

Before the Buccal pad fat removal treatment, you need to consult your doctor and get all the realistic expectations from the surgery beforehand. During the initial visits, the doctor will do a complete examination of your face and will take photographs of your face for reference, and will also understand your family medical history or any past surgery you have undergone. Your blood pressure will be examined and then all the data about any current medications will be recorded. For the best results, you are advised to stop smoking or consumption of tobacco before the surgery.

All your questions and queries will also be addressed during this visit and all the information regarding the surgery will be cleared, realistic expectations for during and post-surgery will be discussed too.

During the buccal fat removal surgery

It is a one-day procedure and the patient is allowed to go back home on the same day itself. During the procedure, you should expect the following-

  • Local anesthesia will be given to you so you don’t feel any pain while operating. If there is another procedure you are undergoing along with this procedure then general anesthesia will be given to you and you will be required to arrange a drive back home from the hospital.
  • Small incisions on one side or both sides of the mouth will be made to introduce or expose the buccal fat pad to the face.
  • Then gently, the surgeon will press on the fat pad to expose them and then make a cut and remove the fat pad.

After this, the incision will be closed with sutures and usually, the sutures are dissolvable. In other cases where the suture is not dissolvable, your doctor will inform you of the next visit for suture removal.

After the buccal fat removal surgery

After the surgery, you will be advised by your doctor on how to take care of your incisions and what other precautions to be doing for faster healing and recovery.

  • You might be advised to use a special mouth rinse to avoid any kind of infection and help you with healing faster.
  • You will have to follow a liquid diet for the initial few days until the incision starts to heal and then slowly you can start with soft foods after consulting with your doctor.
  • You may experience swelling, bruising, and pain along with numbness at the incision sites but they will gradually decrease as you heal.

The incision marks usually fade and the healing time is normally three weeks and it might take several months to see the final results.

Possible recovery time after the surgery

The possible recovery time after the treatment varies from a few weeks to several months to experience the final results. Your doctor will tell you about all the instructions to follow post-surgery including all the follow-up appointments to examine the recovery. The healing starts after 2-3 days of the surgery and the incision marks also start fading after a few days. You can return to continue all the daily tasks after consulting with your doctor within a few weeks after the surgery.
